Vishnuchittar (Periyalvar) — a Brahmin garland-maker of Srivilliputhur — found an infant girl beneath a tulsi plant in the temple garden; he named her 'Kodhai/Goda' (gift of the earth); she is held to be an incarnation of Bhudevi; he raised her as his foster-daughter with Vaishnava sanskaras. As she came of age Andal envisioned herself as the bride of Ranganatha and resolved to marry Sri Ranganatha.
Andal refused any mortal groom and resolved to marry Ranganatha; Nachiyar Thirumozhi vividly describes her dream-wedding; a grand bridal procession carried her from Srivilliputhur to Srirangam; in the sanctum Andal merged into the Ranganatha murti and became one with the Lord — she did not return. Because Ranganatha came as a 'Ranga-vara' (king-bridegroom) here to claim her, the consort form enshrined is called 'Rangamannar' (Ranga-the-king-bridegroom).
Sage Markandeya, witnessing the cosmic flood, saw a divine infant floating on a banyan leaf; entering the infant's body he saw the whole universe preserved within. This is Vishnu's Vatapatrasayi form; the earliest known sculpture of this theme dates to 886 CE at the Nageshwara Temple.
