स्थल-पुराण

कथा, इतिहास एवं महत्व

The Sage Agastya founding narrative (traditional)

Many centuries ago, Sage Agastya is said to have consecrated the Adishakthyathmaka Sri Annapurneshwari murti at the Bhadra river bank in Horanadu — a traditional narrative (indian-heritage.org + Karnataka Tourism + chikkamagaluru.nic.in; exact century unverified). 'Anna-purna = completely-filled-with-food' goddess form is the centre of the annadana tradition.

The Jois family hereditary Dharmakartha narrative (~400 years)

The Jois (Joyis/Joshi) family has the ~400-year hereditary-Dharmakartha-trustee tradition. The 5th Dharmakartha Sri D.B. Venkatasubba Jois renovated the temple in 1962 CE. The 6th Dharmakartha Sri D.V. Gajendra Prasanna Jois built the Navagraha shrine in 1981. The temple is privately-family-trustee-run (not Muzrai, not Sringeri).

The 1973 punarprathishtha and Mahakumbhabhishekam narrative

The 1973 punarprathishtha and Mahakumbhabhishekam were performed by Jagadguru Sri Abhinava Vidyatirtha Mahaswamiji of Sringeri Sharada Peetham (indian-heritage.org + sanatanavibes multi-source consensus). (The Karnataka Tourism and chikkamagaluru.nic.in sources incorrectly attribute this to 'Adi Shankaracharya' — but this is chronologically impossible; Adi Shankaracharya was 8th century.)

The annadana tradition narrative (the temple's centre)

Temple's central tradition: three free meals daily (breakfast at 7:30 + lunch at 12:30 + dinner at 7:30) + tea/coffee/snacks — for all devotees regardless of religion/caste/creed (Karnataka Tourism + indian-heritage.org + chikkamagaluru.nic.in 3-source consensus). The traditional claim 'no devotee leaves Horanadu hungry.' Exact daily count unverified (30K-50K claims are single-source — dropped; only the qualitative 'thousands daily' is used).
