संत एवं परम्परा

  • Adi Shankaracharya (9th century) — re-established Badrinath as a major tirtha; instituted the tradition of appointing a Nambudiri Brahmin from Kerala as the chief priest ('Rawal'); also established the Narsingh Temple at Joshimath in the same era. Pandit Ishwari Prasad Namboodiri served as Rawal from 2 May 2014 to July 2024 (10 years) before voluntary retirement; Naib Rawal Amarnath Namboodiri appointed Acting Chief Rawal.
  • Nar and Narayan (rishi forms) — per Vishnu Purana, performed long penance here for the protection of dharma; discovered hot and cold springs on either side of the Alaknanda and named the area 'Badri Vishal'

Dedicated to Vishnu's mother; tradition: Mata Murti prayed to Vishnu to be born from her womb — leading to Nar-Narayan's birth. Annual fair on Vaman Dwadashi.

Mana Village3 किमी

Population ~10,000. On 21 October 2022 PM Shri Narendra Modi declared it 'not the last but the first village' and laid the foundation stone for ₹3,400+ crore road-ropeway projects. Nearby tirthas: Vyas Gufa, Ganesh Gufa (tradition holds the Vedas and Upanishads were composed here), Bhim Pul.

122-m natural waterfall. Tradition: Pandavas halted here on their heavenly ascent; Sahadeva is said to have left his mortal body here. 'Vasudhara' = 'flow of wealth'. Tradition holds only the pure and unblemished experience the divine flow.
