5 April 1997 — Pramukh Swami Maharaj (the 5th BAPS spiritual leader), during prayer in the Sharjah desert, received the vision of building a Hindu temple in Abu Dhabi. His statement: 'A mandir in Abu Dhabi would bring countries, cultures, and religions closer together.' He passed away in 2016 before completion; the project was carried forward by Mahant Swami Maharaj.
August 2015 — UAE Crown Prince (now President) Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan announced the donation of 27 acres of land (13.5 acres temple + 13.5 acres parking) to BAPS. The announcement was made during PM Modi's UAE visit; central to India-UAE bilateral relations.
11 February 2018 — first stone consecration. 20 April 2019 — foundation laying / shilanyas. December 2019 — construction begins. Main contractor: Shapoorji Pallonji Group. Labour: 2,000+ Indian craftsmen + 200+ international volunteers + 690,000+ volunteer hours. Materials: Rajasthani pink sandstone (exterior) + Aqua Bianca Italian marble (interior); 25,000+ stone pieces (1 kg to 6+ tonnes); marble + black granite + panchaloha deity murtis; fly-ash concrete foundation (55% cement reduction; eco-friendly); traditional stone work (no ferrous/steel in the main structure). AED 400 million / USD ~108 million community-funded.
14 February 2024 — consecration and grand opening ceremony. Morning prana pratishtha led by Mahant Swami Maharaj. Afternoon: joint dedication by Indian PM Narendra Modi + UAE Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahyan. The 12-day 'Festival of Harmony' 10-21 February 2024. 1 March 2024 — public-entry began. 3 March 2024 the first Sunday drew 65,000+ pilgrims. 2.2 million+ first-year pilgrims (Wikipedia).
7 spires represent the 7 Emirates of the UAE (a unity message). The 47-metre 3D-printed 'Wall of Harmony' built by the Dawoodi Bohra Muslim community. The 'Dome of Harmony' represents the 5 natural elements (earth + water + fire + air + space). The symbolic waterfall represents the Ganga + Yamuna + Saraswati confluence.
