  • Bhima-asura — son of Kumbhakarna; furious over his father's slaying by Rama, undertook 1,000 years of tapasya and received an unparalleled boon of strength from Brahma; on attacking a Shiva-devotee king, Shiva assumed the raudra form and reduced Bhimasura to ashes with the 'hum' sound of his trident
  • At the prayer of the devas and rishis, Shiva accepted permanent residence in the Sahyadri as the Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga
