  • Rishi Jambu — Shiva-tapasya under the Jambu (rose-apple) tree; the temple's name 'Jambukeshwar' and 'Thiruvanaikaval' (= holy elephant-forest) derive from him
  • Elephant and spider (akhyayika) — early devotees; the elephant brought water from the Kaveri for abhisheka, the spider wove a web of flowers to protect from the sun's rays
  • Parvati (Akhilandeshwari) — fierce form due to a Shiva-curse; Adi Shankaracharya pacified her by adorning her with 2 ear-rings (tatankam)
