स्थल-पुराण

कथा, इतिहास एवं महत्व

The Chitra Pournami Meenakshi-kalyana narrative (originating sthala-purana)

Goddess Meenakshi (Madurai) sent her elder brother Kallazhagar a wedding invitation for her marriage to Sundareshwarar (Shiva). Kallazhagar walked the 21 km to Madurai but arrived after the wedding had concluded. Displeased, he refused to enter Madurai city and turned back at the Vaigai river — mounting his golden horse vahanam he entered the river and blessed the couple from the water; he then returned to Alagar Kovil.

Manduka Rishi (Sutapa) curse-relief narrative (parallel)

The Vaigai descent also commemorates the lifting of Manduka Rishi's (Sage Sutapa's) curse at Noopura Ganga / Vegavati.

Nalayira Divya Prabandham

'Thirumaliruncholai' Mangalasasanam — sung by 6 Alvars (Nammalvar 46 + Periyalvar 34 + Thirumangai 22 + Andal 11 + Bhutathalvar 3 + Peyalvar 1 = 128 pasurams total)

Andal-Krishna marriage-sankalpa narrative

Andal performed tapasya at Alagar Malai for marriage to Krishna; here Andal is worshipped in a seated form — distinct from every other Divya Desam.

Yoga Narasimha narrative

Sage Romasa installed a Narasimha symbol here; the Lord gave darshan and remained permanently as Yoga Narasimha.
