The temple's principal annual festival — 9 days featuring 9 different swaroop of Mahakal (2026: 6-15 February). Maha Shivaratri is the SOLE day in the year when Bhasma Aarti happens in the AFTERNOON. The morning after Maha Shivaratri (Amavasya), the 'Sehra Darshan' is performed — Mahakal is dressed as a bridegroom with a massive floral veil (Sehra), a tradition unique to Ujjain; the flowers are later distributed to devotees as prasad for a 'happy married life'.
