स्थल-पुराण

कथा, इतिहास एवं महत्व

The Mookasura-slaying narrative

During Sage Kola's tapasya at the Kollur kshetra, an asura (variously named Mooka/Kamha/Kamasura in different sources) performing tapasya for a boon from Bhagavan Shiva began obstructing the rishi. Before the boon could be granted, Adi Parashakti rendered the asura mute (Mooka — speechless) so he could not articulate his request; she then slew the asura — which is why the Devi is named 'Mookambika' (the slayer of the mute asura); the kshetra is named 'Kollur' (Kola + ur = Kola's town).

The Adi Shankaracharya prathishta narrative (Madhaviya Shankara Vijayam tradition)

In the 8th century CE, during his digvijaya yatra, Adi Shankaracharya performed tapasya on the Kollur-Kodachadri peak; after a vision of the Devi, he had Vishvakarma sculpt the panchaloha Devi murti and installed it on the Sri Chakra peeth behind the Swayambhu lingam. West of the garbhagriha, his tapasya spot — the Sankara Simhasanam — is still worshipped today; on the Kodachadri peak, the 'Sarvajna Peetha' stone structure + the Chitramoola cave mark Shankaracharya's tapasya site. A traditional legend: as Shankaracharya was leaving for Kerala, the Devi vowed to follow him, on the condition that he not look back; he looked back at Kollur, and the Devi stayed there.

The iconographic form of the Suvarna Rekha-divided Swayambhu lingam

The Swayambhu lingam at the centre of the garbhagriha is divided into two halves by a golden line (Suvarna Rekha): the left half = Tridevi (Kali + Lakshmi + Saraswati); the right half = Trimurti (Shiva + Vishnu + Brahma) — the world's principal Hari-Hara + Tridevi-Trimurti convergence iconography.

The Souparnika river narrative

Garuda (= Suparna) performed tapasya on the bank of the Souparnika; the river is therefore named 'Souparnika'. Because it flows through the Western Ghats alongside 64 medicinal herbs (per tradition), a Souparnika bath is traditionally held to cure disease; a bath in the Souparnika before Devi-darshan is mandatory.

The Seven Mukti Sthalas of Parashurama Kshetra classification

The Seven Mukti Sthalas of Bhagavan Parashurama Kshetra (Kollur Mookambika + Udupi Krishna + Kukke Subrahmanya + Kumbashi Anegudde Vinayaka + Koteshwara + Shankaranarayana + Gokarna Mahabaleshwar) — Mookambika is the Devi station among the seven.

संत एवं परम्परा

  • Sage Kola — the resident tapasvi of the kshetra; the kshetra is named after him (Kollur = Kola + ur)
  • Adi Shankaracharya — installed the Sri Chakra + panchaloha Devi murti in the 8th century; the Sankara Simhasanam west of the garbhagriha + the Sarvajna Peetha on the Kodachadri peak + the Chitramoola cave are his tapasya sites
  • Garuda (= Suparna) — the tapasvi of the Souparnika river bank; the river is named after him
  • Moola Mookambika — the ancient shrine on the Kodachadri peak; per tradition, the original seat of the Devi before Shankaracharya's prathishta
  • Vishvakarma — under Adi Shankaracharya's direction, the sculptor of the panchaloha Devi murti
  • Sringeri Sharada Peetham — the spiritual guidance source; incoming priests visit Sringeri for the Jagadguru's blessings (a tradition; not a formal administrative branch)
  • Karnataka Muzrai (HR&CE Department, State Government) — the modern administration under the Karnataka HR&CE Act 2011; temple code TM000062; a managing committee + president + state-appointed Executive Officer (EO)
