  • Daruka-asura and his consort Daruka — rulers of the Daruka forest; supreme Shiva-devotees but adharmic; emboldened by a boon from Parvati they became arrogant; Daruka prevented and tortured the Shiva-devotee Vaishya 'Supriya' from teaching Shiva-puja
  • Supriya (Vaishya) — supreme Shiva-devotee; unbroken in his 'Om Namah Shivaya' japa; for his protection Shiva manifested and slew the Daruka-asura; thereafter accepting permanent residence in the Daruka forest as 'Nageshwar'
