Treta Yuga narrative: the demon Sindhu (Sindhurasura), son of Chakrapani and Ugra, received an amrita bowl from Surya and terrorised the three worlds. On the devas' prayers, Ganesha incarnated as Mayureshwar — six-armed, white-complexioned, peacock-mounted; slew his general Kamalasura and killed Sindhu at this site. The Ganesha Purana lists Mayurapuri (Morgaon) among the three greatest Ganesha abodes in the cosmos.
The young Ganesha cracked a mystical egg; from it emerged a peacock that agreed to serve as vahana on condition its name precede Ganesha's — Mayura + Ishwara = Mayureshwar
