The Ramayana-Vibhishana narrative (south-facing Ranganatha)

After Rama's coronation Vibhishana received the Ranganatha idol as a boon; on the way back to Lanka the idol was placed on the Kaveri bank and became immovable; on Vibhishana's plea Vishnu agreed to remain there permanently but with his face turned south toward Lanka — and the deity remains south-facing to this day
