स्थल-पुराण

कथा, इतिहास एवं महत्व

Pandava-Panch Kedar narrative (post-Mahabharata tradition)

After the Kurukshetra war the Pandavas reached Varanasi on Krishna's counsel; Shiva fled to Garhwal in bull-form (Nandi-rupa); at Guptakashi Bhima recognised the bull; Shiva dissolved into the earth and re-emerged at 5 sites: Kedarnath (hump), Tungnath (arms), Rudranath (face), Madhyamaheshwar (navel), Kalpeshwar (hair)

Ramayana-related tradition

Sri Rama performed tapasya at the adjacent Chandrashila peak to atone for slaying Ravana

संत एवं परम्परा

  • Pandavas (especially Arjuna) — traditional belief that Arjuna laid the temple's first foundation
  • Maharshi Vyasa — venerated as a supporting image in the sanctum
  • Kala Bhairava — supporting image in the sanctum
  • Adi Shankaracharya (8th century) — tradition of revival/rediscovery of the Tungnath shrine; while he established a South-Indian priestly lineage at the other Panch Kedar pithas, Tungnath retained the local Garhwali Brahmin lineage
  • Maithani Brahmins (Khasi Brahmins) of Makkumath village — Tungnath's unique local priestly lineage; the only Panch Kedar shrine not served by a South-Indian lineage but by local Garhwali Brahmins
  • Shri Badrinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee (BKTC) — modern administration
